An FA cup tie against a side in the same division as you isn’t the most attractive tie. Considering that at the time of the 4th qualifying round us, Aldershot, were the second highest ranked team in the competition, one would of hoped for a team of a few leagues below and a chance to visit a new ground, play a new side and shatter there dreams of a tie against Swansea or Leeds in the next round. Nevertheless a tie against Crawley provided a chance for large numbers of Shots fans to descend on Broadfield Stadium.
Being relatively close to Brighton, Crawley isn’t the nicest place to visit although the further away from the stadium you go along the Brighton road things seem to improve as you approach the football stadium. Of course as customary there was a large number of men and a few women dressed in florescent yellow. As we entered the stadium, home of Crawley town and the well known convicted criminal, who incidentally was there manager, Steve Evans, we passed the meagre catering facilities provided to us shots fans – this being, one lad and his tea hut serving over 650 shots fans. The ground its self isn’t that bad at all, almost two identical terraces behind each goals and a seated stand running along the touchline on one side.
The match didn’t see Aldershot’s best performance and it was Crawley’s mystery signing who scored the opening goal of the game. However a more spirited second half saw a quality strike from Jonny Dixon equalise set up from a fine Ben Harding assist. However despite the improved second half performance, Aldershot failed to prevent the game going into a replay which was set to be and interesting cup tie – and perhaps it was, maybe for the wrong reasons? ;)
